Portraits
Portraiture is something I really enjoy.
Sometimes I will see a face or an individual that I just know I have to paint. I will be captivated by the pose, expression, shapes of clothes & colors of the figure and I can instantly see how it could be painted.
I also use models and have a couple of muses that I use as inspiration.
At other times I am asked by a client to paint family or friends as a commission.
This is a very special privilege for me and I love developing the image of the person and exploring their character and essence for the final portrait.

Melancholia Figures
Following the death of my dear dad from esophagus cancer I found myself in the studio wanting to draw large pale nudes and thinking about Melancholia & the Four humors from a historical perspective.
Series 1 BODIES - Above - Charcoal, colored pencil, ink & gesso on Snowdon cartridge, 100x70cm
The original ideas for these images was very basic - large nude forms, a familiar & comfortable way for me to explore my thoughts with one figure & one humor; enlarged & cropped and a strong use of white flesh against a black background. I also felt the need to introduce the associated humor somehow and used both it's name and a hint of color, along with the basic organ that was physically affected by the imbalance of the humor.
Series 2 BUSTS - Below- Charcoal, colored pencil, ink & gesso on Snowdon cartridge, 70x56cm
These busts were important as I started to considered the emotional effect the humoral imbalances had on the mental & physical representation of the figure. The head is wrapped for anonymity.
Series 3 EMOTIONS - Above - Acrylic, charcoal, ink, conte crayon & gesso on canvas, 76x76cm
I wanted to focus simply on PURE EMOTION. using a larger image of the figure & creating an even starker aesthetic in order to achieve a strong, raw emotional response.
Series 4 BOTANICAL FIGURES - Below-

These four drawings use the back view of my posed figures with an image of the historical botanicals that were said to alleviate the symptoms of each humor. I also felt finally ready to reintroduce color in my work creating a strong visual for each figure and linking to my humoral colors.
